What is an NMFC Number?

An NMFC number, or National Motor Freight Classification number, is a four-digit code that is used to classify commodities for less-than-truckload (LTL) shipping. The NMFC system was developed by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA), a trade association representing the LTL industry.

NMFC numbers are assigned based on a number of factors, including the density, stowability, handling, and liability of the commodity. Density is a measure of how much weight a commodity takes up in a given space. Stowability refers to how easily a commodity can be stored on a truck. Handling refers to how easy it is to load and unload a commodity from a truck. Liability refers to the risk of damage or loss to a commodity during shipping.

There are 18 different NMFC classes, ranging from 50 to 500. Commodities that are easy to ship and have a low risk of damage are assigned lower NMFC numbers, while commodities that are difficult to ship and have a high risk of damage are assigned higher NMFC numbers.

Why are NMFC Numbers Important?

NMFC numbers are important for a number of reasons. First, they help LTL carriers to determine the cost of shipping a commodity. The cost of shipping a commodity is based on its weight, distance, and NMFC class. Second, NMFC numbers help to ensure that commodities are shipped safely and efficiently. By classifying commodities according to their density, stowability, handling, and liability, the NMFC system helps to prevent damage to commodities and to ensure that they are loaded and unloaded in a timely manner.

How to Find an NMFC Number

If you are a member of NMFTA you can use their searchable database to find an NMFC number for a particular commodity.

In summary, NMFC numbers are an important part of the LTL shipping industry. By understanding the NMFC system, you can ensure that your commodities are shipped safely and efficiently.

Here are some additional tips for using NMFC numbers:

  • Always use the most accurate NMFC number for your commodity.

  • Be sure to update your NMFC numbers if your commodity changes.

  • Check with your LTL carrier to confirm their NMFC rates.
